Schizophrenic holiday
John has been diagnosed by his psychiatrist to be living with severe schizophrenia. As he lives by himself, he has chosen not to worry his family with this information as he feels it is his burden to bear. However John is about to go on a long overseas holiday with his family. John's psychiatrist is concerned about this, as she does not believe that it is wise for John to be away for so long with people who do not know much about his condition. While his family do care about him, they are not likely to understand what's going on if John has a major schizophrenic episode whilst on holiday. John's psychiatrist believe's that despite his condition, John is not at any risk of harming himself or others.
The psychiatrist feels that by getting in touch with John's family she would be able to properly explain to them John's disorder and how to help him with it, as well as ensuring John continues to take his medication whilst travelling.
However if she did this she would be going against John's wishes and breaking patient confidentiality.
It is proposed that The psychiatrist should contact John's family and explain what John is living with.
