In some areas in NZ children have very poor oral health. Funding for health resources is always difficult but who should fund dental health in NZ - and does it matter who provides the money??
The Ronald McDonald House Charity (the charity arm of the fast food giant McDonalds) will shortly provide the Counties Manukau District Health Board with a $500 000 mobile dental unit - one of only two in the country.
Many people are very critical of the connection between fast food and the funding of health promotion, especially when there is an argument that the fast food corporations may be contributing to the poor oral health. In addition, many argue that funding for health should be the responsibility of the government, not big business.
Does the end justify the means? If the outcome is improved oral health then does it matter where the money comes from?
OR
does this highlight contradictions that ought not be tolerated, especially when it concerns the health of our nation's children?
