Mental health, children, and the Family Court

Mental health, children, and the Family Court

I am working as a technical health admin support to a local church based counselling service. Part of my job description is to ensure client information is held securely. In my personal life, I am currently in a relationship with a man who is involved in family court proceedings regarding the day to day care of his children. During the course of my work, I unwittingly came across a file that belonged to my partner's ex wife. Alarmingly I see that she has been diagnosed with a DSM lV psychiatric disorder that could seriously impact the safety of the children. My partner has confided in me some details of the court proceedings and it appears that the ex wife's mental health status might not have been disclosed. I am extremely worried as I truly believe the children's safety will be compromised if she is given day to day care of the children. I feel that the children's lawyer needs to know this information as to fully ascertain what is in the best interest of the children involved.

It is proposed that I myself should pass the information onto the children's lawyer
