Med Lab Science - Reliability of student results
There are several emergency case specimens which have arrived at the medical lab. Claire is the supervisor for the shift and is under a lot of pressure as she is short staffed. She is forced to involve a student scientist for carrying out tests on the emergency samples. It is Claire's responsibility to supervise the student to ensure the protocol is followed. However, as she is preoccupied with other emergency specimens herself, she could not.
Claire has been receiving several phone calls from the physicians asking her to send results urgently. Under the circumstances, Claire forgets to crosscheck one of the patient’s test results obtained by the student, and realizes only after making all results available to the physicians online. Claire has confidence in the student’s ability to perform the tests.
Should Claire recall the patient's result (which she has not crosschecked) even though the results were needed urgently? Or should she trust the student’s test results?
It is proposed that Claire should recall the patient's results.
