Love or life?
Norman is a 68 year old man who has been referred to the hospital counselor by his wifes doctor due to his difficulty dealing with the diagnosis of his wife Marthas cancer. Normans wife was diagnosed with bowel cancer a year ago and as her health deteriorates, Norman finds it harder to cope with the fact that he is losing his wife of 40 years. His difficulty and stress was made apparent to the health care professionals taking care of is wife as every time he came to visit her, he suggested his lack of sleeping and eating as well as his arguments with the doctors about increasing Marthas medication which prompted the doctors to refer him to the counselors. During the counseling sessions he reveals in confidentiality to the counselor (you) that his wife has been experiencing extreme amounts of pain and he can not bare to see her suffering. He also discloses that she has been begging him to set her free by helping her take her own life which he is considering doing followed by taking his own life as he can not imagine his life without her. As the counselor what action should you take? Act on behalf of the wifes request and respect the clients confidentiality by saying nothing about the possible euthanasia and suicide or alert the proper authorities in order to protect two lives.
It is proposed that the counselor alert the proper authorities.
