Mrs Grey is an 85 year old women experiencing acute delirium. She is a high falls risk patients, she keep getting in and out of bed. She is in a state of confusion. As the RN you recognise her need for an anti-psychotic. You get her some Haloperidol, but know she has a history of refusing medication when experiencing delirium. Do you just put the medication in the patients hand and ask that she would take it, without fully educating her about the medication. It will calm her down after all.
Or do you fully inform her that it is an anti-psychotic, and what that means. However, if the patient does refuse the medication she puts herself at high risk of falls, and continuse in her distressed state of mind, her delirium also effects the other patients in the shared room.
