You are a student Nurse on your first day of placement. You have been assigned a nurse to work with who is a level 4 and second in charge. You are introduced to your first patient who had a miscarage at 18 weeks gestation, and gave birth 30 minutes prior to handover at 0700. You are asked to prepare the baby (with your nurse) for the patient to view. When returning to the patients room around 1100 you meet the patients parents and the patients 4 year old daughter who is lying next to her on her bed. After completing a set of vital signs, your nurse explains to the patient that the baby is ready and asks if she would like to see the baby. You notice the patients reaction on her face as she looks at her four year old daughter. The nurse continues talking about the patients plan for discharge. As the nurse is talking you notice the patient quietly say my daughter is asking so many questions, im not sure what to say. You hear the nurse ask again if she should go and get the baby and the patient agrees. Do you allow the nurse to go and get the baby or do you have a conversation with the nurse about the family and 4 year old viewing the miscarried baby?
It is proposed that the 4 year old should not see the miscarried baby unless seen by a social worker first
