Intersex and Politics

Intersex and Politics

Emmalynn is an 11 month old baby who was born intersex (having a mixture of both male and female sexual and reproductive anatomy). Her parents made the decision to class her as a female until she is at an age where she can make that decision for herself. During a routine check up, her GP discovered that she had inherited a life threatening neurological developmental disorder called Rett Syndrome. Her parents are informed that Singapore is the only country that offers surgical treatment for this disorder. Singapore is a country that opposes homosexuality and all other sexualities that are associated with the Rainbow Community, and intersex is no exception. The Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsein Loong, feels that it is unethical to deny healthcare to any child specifically if they had no control over their predicament. He is very open to making an exception for Emmalynn, however Singapore as a nation are outraged with his decision and with elections only 3 months away, Lee Hsein Loong begins to re think his choice. Lee Hsein Loong is a solo parent and so he begins to realise that if he allows the surgery to go forward, not only will there be a high chance of him losing his position as Prime Minister but it will affect his chances of ever re-entering parliament or finding a decent job to support his three children. Does the Prime Minister allow treatment for Emmalynn or does he deny the medical support so that he is able to continue to financially support his own family?

It is proposed that the Prime Minister grant Emmalynn the medical attention she needs
