HEALTHY PROFITS?

HEALTHY PROFITS?

You are the chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Patterson Valley Primary School. The school is in a low decile area and while this means that it receives slightly more funding from the government than other, higher decile schools, there is still a reliance on fundraising and school donations to cover the overheads of each school year.

This year, the school has seen a drastic downturn in school donations and it will have to consider cancelling their plans for updating the computers in the IT department as well as cutting back on school trips.

On the agenda at tonight’s board meeting is the issue of fundraising and one of the newly elected board members has a proposal which is gaining popularity. Bob is a self –employed businessman who has some savvy ways to boost profits. He suggests that a new contractor be sought to run the school tuck shop. He has studied the bottom line and realises that by stocking more cost-effective products the school will benefit financially.

While the school is required to teach about healthy eating, they are now no longer required to have to provide specific foods. He suggests that as long as the school continues to educate the children about healthy food options and provides a small range of healthy food, it is really up to the individual to choose what they wish to eat.

What will you decide?
It is proposed that a new contractor be sought with no restrictions on the type of food sold in the school tuck shop.
