Counselling: Suicide and confidentiality

Counselling: Suicide and confidentiality

Jenny is a school counsellor in a high school. She is seeing Hazel, a 15 year old girl, on a regular basis. Hazel has not attempted suicide before but she has revealed that she often considers it because her life is "filled with liars" she says. She believes that "if everyone is untrustworthy then there is no point in living". It has taken Jenny a long time to build up her trusting professional relationship with Hazel because of her struggle to trust others, so talking to anyone about her may affect the trusting relationship. However, Jenny is very concerned that Hazel may harm herself. Hazel's mother doesn't know she is getting counselling and Jenny doesn't know the reasons for this. Disclosing information to her supervisor may lead to her mum finding out.
