Confidentiality information removed from a locked vehicle overnight!

You are a mental health support worker at "Worth Striving" Support Services Ltd.

The organisation emphasises all workers must keep documentation up to date; a policy you must adhere to.

After a busy day you realise you have two cases yet to write up. They are complicated and will require more time than you have, so you decide to take the files home to complete. However, the next morning you awake to find your locked vehicle had been burgled. Items of value and the two files are missing.

The files were of clients who are local celebrities and the files contained "confidential information".You immediately notified your manager, who is just as upset as you are. The one thing in your favour, neither of the files have names or addresses on the file or on the notes.

You are not sure what to do. Your manager suggests saying nothing and not notifying the clients. After all there is no identifying information on the files. You are not convinced because these clients are well known and in the wrong hand it may be possible to link the info to the client, although improbable.

Should you follow the manager's advice and say nothing or should you contact the clients to warn them of the breach?

What should you do?

It is proposed that you do not disclose the burglary to the clients.
