A gap in communication
A patient enters the dental hygiene clinic. When talking to the patient you realise that English is very poor and even gaining medical history is proving difficult. On examination it is clear the patient has advanced periodontal disease with generalised periodontal readings of 8mm. The patient should be seen by a periodontist for optimal treatment yet when discussed with the patient they seem confused and don’t understand, still insisting treatment from you today. You are unable to get hold of a translator and the dentist you work under insists on treating all patients to increase the amount of money coming into the business.
It is proposed that the patient should be treated with the risk of further progression of periodontal disease
