You are a physiotherapist working in a busy hospital outpatient department as part of your new graduate rotation scheme. You practice in a large room with other physiotherapists and clients, with curtained cubicles. You have a female client who you recognise from TV. She has come to see you as she complains of back pain.
She seems hesitant to talk openly about why she may have the pain, saying that it probably happened while filming on set and that she would appreciate some relief. She seems reluctant to expose her back for your objective assessment, but does agree once you explain that this is an important aspect of your diagnostic process (and therefore your choice of intervention).
On observation she has deep bruising and injuries across her back. Some of the bruises seem recent and others seem older. You are concerned that she may have been assaulted, maybe from a domestic violence type situation, but it could equally be the case that her explanation is plausible.
What should you do?
