Gastric bypass operations on the NHS

Gastric bypass operations on the NHS

Obesity is a growing problem within the UK however the way in which the NHS is currently dealing with the rising problem arises much debate. According to the daily mail “NHS spent up to £81 million on gastric bypasses and up to £10.5 million on gastric bands last year” (2012). Many people are now getting gastric bypass operations on the NHS which some would argue isn't fair on other people with serious conditions who are unable to get help on the NHS such as Scott Elliot who was born with a hole in his heart. He was refused treatment which costs £10,000 whilst gastric bypass operations cost £8000 to £14000 per patient. No doubt there are genuine medical cases that need a gastric bypass but do all cases warrant surgery when maybe it is a lifestyle choice and all that is needed is more exercise, better advice and a healthier, more nutritious diet.
It is proposed that gastric bypass operations should only be given on the NHS if there is a genuine medical condition
